The countryside surrounding Schoonhoven

Apart from the city of Schoonhoven itself there are many other towns and villages within easy reach. Gouda, world-famous for its cheese, is only 10 miles (15km) away. Travelling there by bicycle and following the small river Vlist is a relaxing trip through quintessentially Dutch 'polder' country. Renting a canoe is also possible, and the countryside offers some wonderful walking routes. On your trip you can buy Gouda cheese straight from the farm, or enjoy some fresh ice cream.

In Gouda you can visit the "Waag" where cheeses are weighed. You can also visit the shops or the Saturday market and marvel at the beautiful city hall. This gothic masterpiece is one of Gouda’s eye catchers. Another highlight is the church of St. John; famous for its stained glass windows which were made between 1530 and 1603.

Bergambacht, Lekkerkerk, Dordrecht and Gorinchem are other towns within easy reach and well worth a visit. The countryside has a network of bicycle and walking tracks, and the dikes along the river Lek offer great scenery, especially in the direction of Vianen.
